The Air Force Reserve trains and serves right alongside the permanent Air Force and in most cases, will carry out the same work. However as a Reservist you are a civilian first, one who makes an important contribution through a valuable and diverse range of skills.

Current Operations

Today's Air Force Reservists have participated in operational deployments in East Timor and the Middle East, as well as military exercises and operations within Australia.

Reservists must be available for continuous full-time service in the event of a call out by the Government. This will only happen when it's necessary to draw on the particular capabilities and specialisations found in the Reserve. Call out can be made in a range of circumstances including war, defence emergencies, peacekeeping missions and disaster relief, or to assist governments and agencies in protecting Australia's national security.

Who is eligible?

Reservists come from all walks of life and from all parts of Australia. Some are ex full-time personnel who have discharged from the Air Force, others have no previous military experience.

To join, you must be between 17 and 61 years old and meet the Air Force medical, education and employment history requirements related to the job you are applying for.

Training

Tax-free pay & benefits

Reservists are paid for each day attended, which is six hours or more. You receive half a day's pay for between three and six hours. Learn more

Types of reserve service

RAAF Active Reserve (RAAFAR)
Comprises all the mustering and specialisation represented in the Permanent Air Force and several Reserve-unique employment groups. Members are active for between 32-130 days per year and complete initial recruit or officer training and initial employment/trade training and annual general service training. Active Reserve members may be given the opportunity to transfer to the High Readiness Active Reserve. Note: Air Force is currently recruiting for only a very small number of roles within the RAAFAR for financial year 2010-2011. More RAAFAR recruiting opportunities may resume in financial year 2011-2012. Air Force may revise this policy at short notice and therefore encourage respective candidates to check relevant job pages regularly for individual updates.

RAAF Specialist Reserve (RAAFSR)
Comprises the Health, Legal, Chaplain and Public Affairs specialisations. Members are active for at least 7 days per year and are specialists within their respective professions. Specialist Reserve members may be given the opportunity to transfer to the High Readiness Specialist Reserve.

RAAF Standby Reserve (RAAFSTR)
Comprises all Air Force personnel who are not Active or Specialist Reservists. Ex Permanent Air Force and ex Active or Specialist Reserve members who are not available for annual active duty are transferred to the Standby Reserve.

High Readiness Reserve (HRR)
Comprises members within the Active and Specialist Reserve who are trained, deemed competent and acquire a heightened level of training and readiness - extra bonuses and allowances are applicable.
