You’ll have to complete the Initial Officer Course (IOC) at Officers' Training School (OTS), at RAAF Base East Sale in Victoria. The full-time option runs over 17 weeks, the part-time option runs over five phases organised through OTS. You should aim to complete your IOC within two years of entering the Air Force Active Reserve.
You’ll have to complete the Recruit Course at No 1 Recruit Training Unit (1RTU), RAAF Base Wagga, New South Wales. The full-time option runs over 10 weeks, the part-time option runs over three phases, each of 3 weeks duration which is also undertaken at 1RTU. Your recruit training must be completed within two years of entering the Air Force Active Reserve.
If you’ve acquired specialist qualifications and are interested in joining the Air Force Specialist Reserve, you'll have to complete a six day familiarisation course. This course takes place at OTS, at RAAF Base East Sale, Victoria, within the first two years of service. A range of other specialist courses are available once you've completed initial training.
On completion of either Active or Specialist Reserve Initial Training, there may be the option to transfer to the High Readiness Reserves (HRR) where you'll enjoy extra bonuses and allowances.
As a Reservist, you can take advantage of a range of Defence courses and training to increase your experience and skill base. Day-to-day military tasks will also allow you to put these skills into practice and take on more responsibility, as you develop your rank and leadership ability. Air Force training is nationally accredited, which means the qualifications you gain will also be recognised outside of the Air Force.
