Undergraduate, Graduate, Australian Defence Force Academy

Electronics Engineers in the air environment concentrate on employment aspects relating to aircraft systems and deployed support of those systems. Electronics Engineers in the ground environment concentrate on ground telecommunications systems such as radar and air traffic control and deployed support of those systems.

Depending on current Air Force requirements and the relevant background of applicants, Electronics Engineers may be employed in either of these air or ground environments and will receive applicable training as required.

Air Environment

Aerospace Engineer Officer Initial Course: 4 weeks

Location: RAAF Base Wagga, NSW.

The aim of the Aerospace Engineer Officer Initial Course is to graduate personnel with the underpinning knowledge, skills and attitudes required to fulfil an Aerospace Engineering Officer position within the Australian Defence Organisation engineering environment.

Mainly lecture based, with a visit to the Directorate General Technical Airworthiness and practical exercise components, the course consists of theory and practical instruction in the management of technical personnel, Australian Defence Force engineering and maintenance practice, the use of Australian Defence Force technical publications and occupational safety. The course is normally completed within the first two years of service.

Aerospace Systems Familiarisation Course: 3 weeks

Location: RAAF Base Williams, VIC.

The aim of the Aerospace Systems Familiarisation Course is to graduate Aerospace Engineers with a basic understanding of aerospace weapons systems and supporting infrastructure relevant to their initial employment in the Australian Defence Organisation aviation environment.

Specialist category courses provide Aerospace Engineers with specific knowledge on the functions of their specialisation. The course covers technical administration, management procedures and practices within the Australian Defence Force aircraft operations environment through a combination of lectures, briefs and practical exercises with various Defence and related industry site visits. The course is normally completed within the first two years of service.

Ground Environment

Aerospace Engineer Officer Initial Course: 4 weeks

Engineering Officer Electronics Ground: 2 weeks

Location: Begins at HMAS Harman, ACT.

The aim of the Engineering Officer Electronics Ground course is to graduate electronics engineers capable of managing ground telecommunications systems in the ADF environment.

Specialist category courses provide Aerospace Engineers with specific knowledge on the functions of their specialisation. The Engineering Officer Electronics Ground course covers technical administration, management procedures and practices within the Australian Defence Force ground environment, RADAR, Air Traffic Control systems and communications through a combination of lectures with considerable Defence and related industry site visits. The course is normally completed within the first two years of service.
