Trade Training (Aircraft Structures) - 60.3 weeks
Training Philosophy.
The training philosophy adopted by the RAAF for Aircraft Structural Tradespeople is based on progressive multi-skilling and extensive practical reinforcement through "on the job training". Training is based on the requirements of the MEA07 Aeroskills Training Package and is aligned to the Competency Standards required for a Certificate IV in Aeroskills (Structures). Following completion of an Aircraft Structural Fitter course and attainment of the competency standards you will be issued with an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level IV certificate.
Aircraft Structural Fitter Course.
This course is designed to graduate Aircraft Structural Fitters proficient in the engineering handskills required for all levels on conventional aircraft structural maintenance and repair. The course includes predominantly practical phases covering the development and manufacture of general sheet metal work items, the development, manufacture and repair of aircraft structural items, plumbing and ducting. The course is conducted at the RAAF School of Technical Training (RAAFSTT) at Wagga. On completion of this training, trainees graduate as Leading Aircraftsman/Leading Aircraftswoman (LAC/LACW) Aircraft Structural Fitters Grade 1 and are then posted to an air base to undergo on the job training.
Fitter Progression.
Having graduated as an Aircraftman/Aircraftwoman (AC/ACW) Aircraft Structural Fitter grade 1, members are required to consolidate their training through work experience. The minimum requirement for progression to Advanced Aircraft Structural Fitter is the completion of 24 months employment as a fitter (comprising a minimum of 12 months as a AC/ACW Fitter grade 1 and 12 months as a LAC/LACW Fitter grade 2) plus the successful completion of the competency standards required to qualify for a Trade Certificate. This results in the member being remustered to LAC Advanced Aircraft Structural Fitter. Following a further 24 months experience as an LAC/LACW Advanced Aircraft Structural Fitter, and the successful completion of pre-requisite training and satisfactory performance, the member will be eligible for consideration for promotion to CPL. Advancement through the ranks to Warrant Officer is in competition with other Advanced Aircraft Structural Fitters.
