Further Training
There are a number of career options that provide for employment beyond Advanced Aircraft Structural Fitter, however, in every instance, advancement is competitive and strictly according to Service requirements, regardless of which career path is chosen. The following options are available:
Progression Through Promotion.
Advanced Aircraft Structural Fitters may choose to remain at the Technician skill level and seek advancement through the ranks to Warrant Officer. This career option provides for a wide variety of employment on aircraft and in workshop environments.
Selection for Advanced Fitter (Aircraft Welding) Course.
Completion of a minimum 12 months training consolidation as an Advanced Aircraft Structural Fitter, coupled with promotion to Corporal, will enable selected personnel to undergo Aircraft Welding Specialist training. Training will be conducted at RAAFSTT with personnel graduating as Advanced Aircraft Structural Fitter (Welding). Selection will be based on application against vacancies. The number of welder qualified personnel is strictly controlled through Unit constrained establishment annotations. Personnel may continue to be employed in their base trade on an opportunity basis for maintenance of skills and will continue to compete for promotion to SGT with all other Advanced Aircraft Structural Fitters.
Selection for Advanced Technician (Non Destructive Testing - NDT) Course.
On completion of a minimum 12 months training consolidation as Advanced Aircraft Structural Fitter, coupled with promotion to CPL, personnel will be eligible to apply for selection for NDT Technician training. Personnel selected for NDT duties will only be drawn from those CPL Advanced Aircraft Structural Fitters who are not Advanced Aircraft Structural Fitter (Welding) qualified subject to constrained establishment vacancies. Personnel selected for NDT employment are expected to remain in this field for the duration of their career and will compete for promotion and posting with other NDT qualified Technicians. Members will be remustered to Advanced Aircraft Technician (NDT) 12 months after graduation from course if mandatory consolidation employment has been completed.
