Other Ranks (Non Technical), Qualified

Cooks are employed in all aspects of food preparation and production. This includes purchase, receipt, storage, preparation, cookery, presentation and serving of the finished product. Air Force catering provides meals of a high standard with service levels varying according to rank. In addition to normal dining room meals Air Force cooks are employed in in-flight kitchens, field cookery and instructional posts at the ADF School of Catering, HMAS CERBERUS Westernport, Victoria.

Shift and weekend work are common. Most Air Force kitchens are well equipped and maintained. Suitable protective clothing, tools of trade (knifes etc) and footwear are provided at public expense.

Other Ranks (Non Technical) (Reserve)

Cooks in the Royal Australian Air Force Reserve are trained in preparation for their contingency role in one of the Air Force's expeditionary and in-situ combat support squadrons. Cooks are posted to Reserve squadrons which organise their initial and basic Cook training.

Cooks are employed in all aspects of food preparation and production. This includes purchase, receipt, storage, preparation, cookery, presentation and serving the finished product. In addition, to normal dining room meals, Reserve cooks may be employed in messes, in-flight kitchens and field cookery.

Most Air Force kitchens, both fixed and deployed are well equipped and maintained. Suitable protective clothing, tools of trade and footwear are provided at public expense. Working conditions are usually indoors in a kitchen environment which can be noisy and extremely hot. Whilst on deployment, cooks are required to work in the field under tentage and is subject to the full spectrum of climatic conditions including heat, humidity, cold and wet weather. Deployment conditions can be dusty and muddy for long periods. However, working conditions are generally good in fixed messes. The operational role of a Cook will require them to develop the specialised Ground Defence skills and knowledge needed to perform their duties in an operational environment.
