Other Ranks (Non Technical)
General Hands are employed in the Air Force on a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks and are utilised as a flexible staffing resource.
General Hands are responsible for providing unskilled and semi-skilled support to Air Force units. They may be employed in administrative, medical, environmental health and flight line areas. For this reason working conditions vary from location to location according to the nature of employment.
General Hands are able to progress to the rank of Sergeant.
Other Ranks (Non Technical) (Reserve)
General Hands in the Royal Australian Air Force Active Reserve are employed in either Airbase Protection or other Flights across the Air Force.
The Airbase Protection Flight was created to augment Permanent Air Force security forces during times of increased security. General Hand Reserve Airbase Protection Flight (RAPF) are enlisted to work in airbase protection and will undertake vehicle control point, observation post, reaction force, and vehicle and foot patrolling duties. To enable these tasks to be performed training for members of Airbase Protection Flights will include legal powers, negotiating skills, self defence measures, use of a variety of weapons, and tactical skills used for patrolling and reacting to security threats. Members of Airbase Protection Flight need to have a high commitment to physical fitness and the ability to deal with members of the public.
Working conditions for General Hands (RAPF) vary from location to location according to the nature of employment. General Hands in Airbase Protection Flight will spend the majority of their working time out of doors, in all weather conditions by both day and night. General Hands (RAPF) may be exposed to excessive noise, extreme temperatures and the handling of hazardous material. The employment of GHAND (RAPF) enables the Air Force to meet its primary objective of keeping Australia's air defence and strike capabilities operational.
General Hand (FACILITIES) who enlist in the Royal Australian Air Force Active Reserve are employed in a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks and are utilised as a flexible staffing resource.
General Hand (FACILITIES) may be employed in an Air Force support unit, expeditionary or in-situ combat support squadron, logistic support unit, flying squadrons, wings and higher command headquarters.
General support tasks include maintaining the organisation of tool and equipment stores, hangar and office cleaning, the cleaning and washing of aircraft and service vehicles, general maintenance duties, support in manual labour tasks and the preparation of field camps for exercises.
