The primary responsibilities of the Laboratory Officer are to perform and supervise a range of common pathology laboratory investigations on patients under ADF medical care. This involves the management of a small staff of technicians. In addition, the Laboratory Officer is required to advise clinicians on the interpretation of laboratory reports and further investigations.

Typical responsibilities may include:

  • conduct routine haematology investigations;
  • provide routine blood crossmatching and screening services in support of casualty and surgery;
  • perform routine and specialised chemistry analysis;
  • perform microbiological analysis of biological and environmental samples;
  • maintain instrumentation integrity through regular preventative maintenance and minor repairs;
  • collect specimens for analysis in RAAF laboratories;
  • manage laboratory resources; and
  • conduct training for subordinate staff.
