Job Details
The role of a Motor Transport Driver (MTD) in the Royal Australian Air Force Active Reserve is to provide driving support within all areas of operations. MTD personnel within the Royal Australian Air Force Active Reserve (RAAFAR) are trained in Reserve squadrons, in preparation for their operational role in one of the RAAF operational units. These units may include expeditionary and in-situ combat support squadrons, logistics operational support units, combat support hospitals, maintenance or flying squadrons, wings and higher command headquarters. MTD personnel may also be employed in Reserve squadrons on driving instructor duties.
MTD personnel as members of Reserve squadrons may be employed in base warehouses, clothing stores, dangerous goods stores, explosive depots and stores, catering stores, medical stores, facilities sections, transport sections, air movements and refuelling sections and fuel farms. Their core duties involve driving associated with the operation of specialist vehicles, including aircraft refuelling tankers, runway sweepers and forklifts, and the transport and storage of explosive ordnance and hazardous stores.
The operational role of a MTD will require them to develop the specialised Ground Defence skills and knowledge needed to perform their duties in an operational environment. MTD's will also be required to undergo specialist training in order to carry out their duties in the fields of air movements, aircraft refuelling, motor transport operations and dangerous/hazardous stores.
Career progression beyond SGT requires members to remuster. Remuster to Movements (MOV) is usually recommended, as MTD duties are subsumed within the MOV mustering within the Permanent Air Force.
