Other Ranks (Non Technical)

Salary while undertaking Military (Recruit) Training: $1,076 per fortnight ($28,060 per year).*

Salary while undertaking Employment Training: $1,216 per fortnight ($31,719 per year).*

Salary (excluding allowances) on completion of Employment Training: $1,483 per fortnight ($38,662 per year).*

In addition to your base salary, Service Allowance at the rate of $409 per fortnight ($10,672 per year) is paid once you have completed Recruit and Employment training to compensate for the unique requirements that service life may impose on you or your family.

To assist you in maintaining your uniforms in good order and condition, you will also receive a Uniform Allowance of $16.06 per fortnight ($419 per year).

Each General Entry job in the Australian Defence Force is classified into a pay group. This particular job is classified below:

  • Pay Group (PG) 2 – On successful completion of Initial Employment Training.
  • Pay Group (PG) 3 – Upon completion of 12 months productive service post Initial Employment training and completion of further Movements trade training.
  • Pay Group (PG) 4 – On posting to a Sergeant position and completion of further Movements trade training.

Salary will continue to increase based on rank and the number of years of service completed in that rank. Pay Group may also increase following the acquisition of additional skills and completion of advanced courses. 

Trainees with dependants may be entitled to Trainee's Dependant Allowance which is paid to enable trainees with dependants to receive a salary not less than $1,406 per fortnight ($36,658 per year) while training. Conditions apply. Speak to your Careers Counsellor for details.

Other Ranks (Non Technical) (Reserve)
Salary while undertaking Military (Recruit) Training: $66.88 per day tax free.

Salary while undertaking or waiting to complete Employment Training: $78.21 per day tax free.

Each General Entry job in the Australian Defence Force is classified into a pay group. This particular job is classified below:
  • Pay Group (PG) 2 – On successful completion of Initial Employment Training.
  • Pay Group (PG) 3 – Upon completion of 12 months productive service post Initial Employment training and completion of further Movements trade training.
  • Pay Group (PG) 4 – On posting to a Sergeant position and completion of further Movements trade training.
Members of the Reserve on part-time service are paid at a daily rate of pay and this occupation attracts a starting rate of $105.92 per day. Your Pay Group will normally increase following the acquisition of additional skills and completion of advanced courses.

In addition to your salary, a Service Allowance of $11.01 per day is payable to compensate for the unique demands of Reserve Service.
