AIA Initial Employment Training (IET) course: 8 weeks

All AIAs are required to undertake the Air Intelligence Analyst Initial Employment Training (IET) Course. The AIA IET course is the foundation course for junior AIA Airmen following completion of 1RTU. The course is conducted as the first phase of the AIA IET for all Air Force Intelligence Airmen at the Air Intelligence Training Flight, RAAF Base Edinburgh, SA.

The AIA IET Course is designed to provide airmen with a basic understanding of intelligence support to air operations. Students are provided with a theoretical grounding in the application of air power, including: air campaigns; air missions; air task orders and cycles; Aviation Risk Management; airbase operations; targeting; Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR); cyber and space operations. Students are also provided with an introduction to weapons systems relevant to air operations.

AIA OPINT IET course: 11 weeks

The Operations Intelligence Initial Employment Training (OPINT IET) course is the foundation course for junior AIA airmen selected for employment as Operational Intelligence Analysts. The course is conducted as the second phase of the AIA IET, for OPINT Analysts and conducted at the Air Intelligence Training Flight, RAAF Base Edinburgh, SA. To graduate Air Intelligence Analysts must be capable of providing all-source intelligence analysis support to aerospace and air base operations at the operational and tactical levels.

The AIA OPINT IET course will provide personnel with a working knowledge of:

Intelligence Estimates (IE);
Joint Intelligence Preparation of the Battlespace (JIPB) for air, space, cyber, Counter-Intelligence (CI);
Ground Intelligence (GI);
Target systems analysis (TSA);
Air Intelligence roles in support of Squadrons and Task Unit Headquarters (TUHQ);
Awareness of Air Intelligence roles in support of security force Squadrons; and
Collection and ISR management in a multi-dimensional battlespace.

SPECIALIST TRAINING

Languages

Military Communication Skills (Primary Foreign Language) course: 20 weeks

AIA (OPINT)s may be required to undertake language training to meet Air Force intelligence capability requirements, at the Defence Force School of Languages, which is located at RAAF Base Williams at Laverton in Victoria. At the completion of this training, AIA (OPINT)s graduate as qualified linguists. Final assessment results are rated according to the Australian Defence Language Proficiency Rating Scale (ADLPRS).

Signals Intelligence - Linguist course: 34 weeks

After completion of the Military Communications Skills course, AIA (OPINT)s undertake up to a further 34 weeks of training at the Electronic Warfare Wing of the Defence Force School of Signals which is located at Cabarlah (north of Toowoomba), in Queensland. This is a Joint Service School and you will be training alongside Navy and Army personnel being prepared for similar duties.

This training covers aspects of:

Security procedures;
Radio communications;
Radio theory; and
Specialist equipment procedures.

AIA (OPINT)s are also taught to touch-type to 35 words per minute. Radio communications covers areas such as radiotelephony and logging procedures. During radio theory, AIA (OPINT)s are taught about radio receiver/transmitter, antenna types, radio propagation and the many aspects of radio communications. As this course is competency based, course durations may vary (typically 30-34 weeks), dependant upon breaks in training and prior skills (eg. Language and touch-typing ability).

Counter-Intelligence

Counter-Intelligence (CI) Initial Course: 12 weeks

Upon successful completion of the AIA (OPINT) CI Skills Simulation and notification of posting to an Air Force CI Operational Team, an AIA (OPINT) will be panelled to conduct Air Force CI Initial Operational Team Training. The Counter-Intelligence Initial Operational Team training is the foundation course for AIA (OPINT) airmen and women selected for employment as counter-intelligence operators. The course is modularised and consists of:

CI policy and doctrine;
CI briefs and reports;
Intelligence collection threat TTPs;
Intelligence Preparation and Monitoring of the Battlespace support to CI;
CI support to AVRM;
Advanced driver, basic static foot and vehicle surveillance training;
Debriefing, interviewing and body systems analysis (BSA) training; and
Specialist communications and photographic equipment training.

Ground Intelligence

Ground Intelligence (GI) Initial Course: 10 weeks

The Air Force GI Initial Course provides personnel of the AIA (OPINT) stream with the skills and knowledge to be employed in an Air Force GI environment. The GI Course is designed to provide AIA (OPINT)s with a basic understanding of GI support to Air Force operations.

Students are provided with a theoretical grounding in the application of threat forces tactics, blue force tactics, ISR collection planning and the roles and responsibilities of an Air Intelligence cell supporting Air Force operations. Students are also provided with an introduction to weapons systems relevant to ground operations.
