Job Details
Other Ranks (Non Technical)
Photographers (PHOTOs) are employed on duties associated with the capture and processing of visual information for dissemination to the Air Force, Defence, commercial organisations and the media. Photographers work with an extensive range of professional equipment, not least of which is state of the art digital cameras.
In specialist areas, such as F-111 photo reconnaissance, Air Force Photographers operate and maintain equipment to process black and white aerial film, although this area is gradually being phased out. Other specialist duties include creating video productions using broadcast quality equipment for Research and Development reports. Digital imagery has been introduced into the Air Force, with Photographic sections now fully migrated to digital capture and electronic dissemination of imagery.
On most bases Photographer duties are predominantly performed in an office-like environment, including purpose designed buildings and facilities. Photographers are required to work outdoors in a variety of climate conditions and in potentially hazardous environments such as aircraft, flight-lines, ordnance handling areas, equipment loading areas, engineering workshops and Areas of Operation. While deployed in an Area of Operation or on exercise, the Photographer may be required to work in the confined spaces of a deployable cabin and make-shift production facilities. PHOTOs may also be required to work irregular hours depending on the nature of the tasking.
