Job Details

Other Ranks (Non Technical)

Within the RAAF Security Police (SECPOL) mustering there are two employment streams:

  • Security and Law Enforcement (SLE); and
  • Military Working Dog Handlers (MWDH).

You will be required to choose a specific specialisation at the time of application. On enlistment (regardless of the selected specialisation), all SECPOL undergo the SECPOL Introductory Course covering basic law enforcement, security and emergency response practices and procedures. Following the successful completion of the SECPOL Introductory Course, new SECPOL members undertake specialisation basic training in SLE or MWDH. Until both SECPOL Introductory and specialisation basic training has been completed, there is no opportunity to change specialisation streams.

The RAAF Security and Policing Service as a whole, is responsible for providing the following main activities:

  • Military law enforcement, including the detection and minor investigation of offences in contravention of military and civilian law;
  • Security Risk Management and Operational Security;
  • Protective Security measures, including the exposure of security breaches, response to security alarms, supervision of base access control, Protective Security Surveys, Threat Assessments and providing security advice;
  • Military working dog handling, which includes security patrols and law enforcement; and
  • Emergency response for incidents such as aircraft crashes, motor vehicle accidents, traffic and crowd control.

MWDH use Military Working Dogs to patrol flight lines and other operational assets for fixed airbase operations. MWDH also conduct patrols with RAAF Ground Defence (Airfield Defence Guards) in operational environments, beyond the airfield perimeter. MWDH are generally the first security personnel to attend either police or emergency situations, as these members conduct the after hours physical security of an Airbase.

SLE personnel undertake security functions from a ground environment perspective, in support of air operations. They are required to provide advice, conduct and assist others in security related matters – protective security, risk assessment/management and the identification of threats to the Airbase.

All SECPOL personnel are required to work indoors and outdoors, during the day or on shifts as required, and periodically in extreme weather conditions, often working long and irregular hours. SECPOL employment is open to both males and females.

Police and security work is at times physically and mentally demanding, therefore all SECPOL personnel are required to maintain a high level of physical fitness.

Other Ranks (Non Technical) (Reserve)

Security Police (SECPOL) in the Royal Australian Air Force Active Reserve are trained in preparation for their contingency role in one of the Air Force's operational units. These units may include expeditionary and in-situ combat support squadrons, and operational security establishments.

Reserve Security Police (SECPOL) are usually employed on operational bases and combat support units but may be employed in other areas where their civilian employment and domestic circumstances permit.

The SECPOL mustering comprises two main streams for employment which are Security and Law Enforcement (SLE) and Military Working Dog Handler (MWDH) streams. SECPOL personnel may be involved in physical, personnel and information security; risk management, counter-intelligence duties; and support to Airfield Defence operations. Military Law enforcement involves the detection and investigation of offences, and the apprehension and prosecution of offenders. Additionally, SECPOL are involved in Emergency Response, which includes the capability to react to such incidents as aircraft crashes, motor vehicle accidents, fire, natural disasters, traffic control and crowd control duties.

The operational role of SECPOL will require them to develop the specialised Ground Defence skills and knowledge needed to perform their duties in an operational environment.

Note: Military Working Dog Handler (MWDH) is only open to ex Permanent Air Force members who are qualified MWDHs.
