If you`re good at problem solving and have the ability to learn a language, this large Australian organisation requires motivated staff for the translating of sensitive foreign language material.

Job Details

Signals Operator Linguists (SIGSOP(L))s are employed in the sensitive and highly challenging field of signals intelligence. After initial training, the main duties are to collect, process and disseminate foreign signals intelligence using specialist communications receiving and analysis equipment and computer based technology. After consolidation of initial language and operator training at the Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) in Canberra, SIGSOP (L) duties will include:

  • Translating foreign language material;
  • Preparing intelligence reports; and
  • Analysing communication systems.

A SIGSOP(L) must have high levels of written and oral communications skill, be able to think logically and objectively, perform well under pressure and have strength of conviction. Because decisions made by the SIGSOP(L) may impact on ADF operations, they must demonstrate integrity and be able to foster confidence in their decisions and trust in their abilities. SIGSOP(L)s are required to have a well-developed analytical approach to problem solving; a positive and responsible attitude to handling classified material and a commitment to protecting information that is sensitive to national interests. SIGSOP(L)s are information collectors, processors and managers and must be competent in the use of information technology systems and be willing to rapidly assimilate and adapt to newly introduced technology.

Typically SIGSOP(L)s will conduct the majority of their duties in temperature controlled high security environments, including purpose designed buildings and facilities. Due to security requirements, many of these work areas will not have windows. SIGSOP(L)s must be able to deploy in support of ADF operations and when deployed in a tactical or field environment SIGSOP(L)s may be required to work in deployable, security accredited cabins, tents and makeshift facilities.

SIGSOP(L)s are regularly required to perform shiftwork. When deployed, demanding and extended hours with varied shifts may be expected.  In deployed and non-deployed environments, SIGSOP(L)s will operate as part of a team but in some scenarios will be the only intelligence member of a team.

Note:

Given the time associated with the processing of Top Secret Positive Vetting (TS(PV)) clearances and the need to be TS(PV) cleared prior to the commencement of Phase 2 initial SIGSOP(L) training, SIGSOP(L) trainees will be transferred to the General Hand mustering (Pay Group 1) as an aircraftman/aircraftwoman after graduation from No 1 Recruit Training Unit. If delays are imposed, this will provide the opportunity to gain experience and employment across a range of duties while awaiting your TS(PV) clearance. Upon completion of Initial Employment Training, you will automatically be transferred back to the SIGSOP(L) mustering as an aircraftman/aircraftwoman with no seniority and paid at the salary rate applicable to a SIGSOP (L) Grade 1 (Pay Group 4). TS(PV) clearance is not required for initial language training.

More information about the security clearance requirements for SIGSOP(L) can be found under the  ‘Security Requirement’ section.
