Signals Operator Linguists (SIGSOP(L))s are part of the Air Force’s Aerospace Intelligence Employment Group and are employed in the sensitive and highly challenging field of signals intelligence. SIGSOP(L)s contribute directly to the Air Force mission in a wide range of Information Warfare related roles.
After initial training, the main duties of the SIGSOP(L) are to apply language and analytical skills to collect, process and disseminate foreign signals intelligence using state-of-the-art technology. After consolidation of initial language and operator training at the Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) in Canberra, SIGSOP(L) duties will include:
- Translation of foreign language material;
- Preparation of intelligence reports; and
- Analysis of communications systems and methods.
In subsequent employment, SIGSOP(L)s will be employed in a diverse range of specialist intelligence related duties. To perform these duties a SIGSOP(L) must have high levels of written and oral communications skill, be able to think logically and objectively, perform well under pressure, be flexible and have strength of conviction. This is because decisions made by the SIGSOP(L) may impact on ADF operations. SIGSOP(L)s must demonstrate integrity and be able to foster confidence in their decisions and trust in their abilities. SIGSOP(L)s are required to have a well-developed analytical approach to problem solving; a positive and responsible attitude to handling classified material and a commitment to protecting information that is sensitive to national interests. SIGSOP(L)s are information collectors, processors and managers and must be competent in the use of information technology systems and be willing to rapidly assimilate and adapt to newly introduced technology.
Employment conditions vary but due to security requirements, the majority of SIGSOP(L) duties are performed in windowless environments and most work occurs using computer work stations or portable systems. There is shiftwork in some workplaces and odd work hours also occur during major exercises or extended operations. Personnel supporting flying operations may deploy to remote locations at short notice. All members of the SIGSOP(L) mustering should expect temporary duties to any location for exercise, specialist training courses or to reinforce other units on deployment. When deployed in a tactical or field environment, SIGSOP(L)s may be required to work in deployable, security accredited cabins, tents and makeshift facilities.
In deployed and non-deployed environments, SIGSOP(L)s will operate as part of a team but in some scenarios will be the only intelligence member of a team.
