Other Ranks (Non Technical)
Phase 1 - Language Primary Skills course: 22 weeks
After graduation from No 1 Recruit Training Unit SIGSOP(L)s undertake language training at the Defence Force School of Languages, which is located at RAAF Base Williams at Laverton in Victoria. At the completion of this training SIGSOP(L)s graduate as qualified linguists. Final assessment results are rated according to the Australian Defence Language Proficiency Rating Scale (ADLPRS). This training also receives recognition under the ACT Accreditation authority if the required standard is attained.
Phase 2 - Initial Signals Operator course: 30 weeks
On receipt of a TS(PV) security clearance, SIGSOP(L)s undertake a further 30 weeks of training at the Electronic Warfare Wing of the Defence Force School of Signals which is located at Cabarlah, in Queensland. This is a Joint Service School and you will be training alongside Navy and Army personnel being prepared for similar duties.
This training covers aspects of:
- Security procedures;
- Radio communications;
- Radio theory; and
- Specialist equipment procedures.
SIGSOP(L)s are also taught to touch type to 35 words per minute.
Radio communications covers areas such as radiotelephony and logging procedures. During radio theory, SIGSOP(L)s are taught about radio receiver/transmitter, antenna types, radio propagation and the many aspects of radio communications.
