Further Training

Other Ranks (Non Technical)

Progression from the rank of aircraftman/aircraftwoman to warrant officer requires the completion of specialist courses, the achievement of competencies and maintenance of qualifications and currencies where applicable. In addition, as you progress through your career you will be categorised at various stages according to your rank and skill level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be a linguist when I finish my initial training?

Yes. After your initial training and consolidation you will probably undertake further language training in the same language (22 weeks) either in Melbourne or at the Defence Force School of Languages, Canberra campus. After these further studies and as long as the required standard is attained, you will be a fully qualified linguist with a Diploma in Applied Language. This is a civilian recognised accreditation.

Can I do further SIGSOP(L) post-graduate training?

There are a wide variety of courses that you may undergo as a SIGSOP. These include:

  • Advanced language or additional language courses;
  • Instructor Course;
  • Assessor Course;
  • Training development; and
  • Many computer and intelligence related courses.

There is also provision for other courses through universities and civilian institutions.

How long will I have to stay in Canberra?

Initially you will be posted to Canberra for approximately 3 years. During this period there will be opportunities to expand your career by completing different courses and undertaking various duties. For example, you may be employed using your linguist skills in reporting or analytical roles.

Are there overseas posting opportunities for SIGSOP(L)s?

There are limited overseas posting opportunities for senior SIGSOP(L) personnel. There are currently two overseas positions available to suitably qualified flight sergeants. There are also limited opportunities that may become available for overseas training, overseas attachments and deployments, including the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO).
