A Basic Medical Assistant Course (BMAC) for the Navy, Army and Air Force is conducted at the Army Logistics Training Centre Bonegilla (near Albury VIC), or Medical Training School at HMAS Cerberus (near Melbourne, VIC). The BMAC provides 39 weeks of theory and practical training in basic nursing skills, first aid, anatomy and physiology and includes working under the supervision of Australian Defence Force Nursing Officers in a civilian environment.

Initial posting following the BMAC is to a major Air Force health facility to enable access to appropriate ongoing training and assessment.

All MEDASSTs are required to complete Skill Maintenance Log Book (SMLB) competency requirements throughout their career. All MEDASSTs undertake driver, defence emergency vehicle and airfield familiarisation training during their initial posting.

Before being eligible for promotion to Corporal, MEDASSTs must complete Professional Military Education and Training (PMET) and SMLB maintenance requirements.

In order to progress to a rank of Sergeant, all MEDASST must complete the Medical Assistant Advanced course (AMAC), comprising 15 weeks residential study conducted at the Health Operational Conversion Unit (HOCU), RAAF Amberley. Members must also be in possession of a current SMLB and complete PMET requirements to be eligible for promotion.
