The Air Force can provide you with travel opportunities above and beyond most other industries. When you talk to anyone from the Air Force, one of the first things you'll hear about is all the places they've visited. Whether it's travelling around Australia or overseas, some people who have only been in the Air Force for a year or two, can reel off a list off more destinations than most people will see in a lifetime.
Involvement in Australian Defence Force operational deployments is another way you might get to travel, this time the world over. Be a part of disaster relief operations that take you to all parts of the globe.
The Department of Defence proved to be an integral part of the national humanitarian relief effort to Indonesia, following the Boxing Day Tsunami and March earthquake. These types of missions are challenging but are just about the most important job you could ever do. You get the opportunity to immerse yourself in cultures completely different to your own, as you set about helping others to rebuild their lives. What could be more challenging? Or more rewarding?
You might get posted to one of our many Air Force bases which are located right around Australia. From Point Cook to Pearce to Tindal and everywhere in-between. Whilst you'll carry out your official duties during working hours, you're free to live a normal life when you're off duty.
You'll find that in the Air Force you get more time off than you would in most other jobs. You will have a Basic Annual Leave Entitlement of four weeks per year. You may also be entitled to five extra days recreational leave to compensate for any additional time spent carrying out official duties, after hours or on weekends. After 10 years of service you become eligible for three months long service leave.
We know that it's difficult being separated from your loved ones. That's why we give you lots of opportunities to visit them while you're in the Service.
If you're single, paid Recreation Leave Travel allows you to return to your hometown to see mum and dad. Reunion Travel enables you to arrange visits with your spouse and kids, if you are separated from them while on duty.
If a family member is ill or there has been a death in the family, you can apply for Compassionate Travel. This kind of travel may also be granted in other exceptional circumstances.
