Infantry

Infantry is the primary combat arm of the Australian Army. Their role is to seek out and close in on the enemy, to kill or capture them, to seize and hold ground and repel attack. They perform tasks by day or night, regardless of season, weather or terrain. To carry out this role the Royal Australian Infantry Corps (RAInf) relies heavily on skilled tactics, effective teamwork and cooperation with other corps.

ARH Tiger Pilots

The pilots of the Army's new ARH Tiger are equipped with the Helmet Mounted Sight Display (HMSD). This incredibly advanced visor allows the aircraft's imaging units and cannon to point to wherever the pilot is looking. The imagery from these units can then be overlaid over the pilot's own vision giving them the ability to see at night or even in infra-red. Find out what it takes to be a pilot in the Army. Commandos are highly skilled Special Forces soldiers capable of advanced infantry tactics. They are trained and qualified in a range of advanced specialist weapons and equipment and can deploy to their area of operations over long distances using a wide range of insertion methods. They can operate in a variety of demanding operational situations conducted in complex terrain. The Commando is mentally tough, quick thinking, innovative and can keep a cool head in difficult situations, attributes required to fulfil the role of operating direct-attack missions.

Army Personnel Weaponry

F88 Austeyr

The standard issue weapon for the Australian Army is the F88 Austeyr assault rifle. A notable feature of the weapon is the compact configuration known as a bullpup design. This refers to how the mechanism and magazine are located behind the trigger which allows for a longer barrel length without making the overall weapon any longer. The benefits of this are increased manoeuvrability (especially within vehicles), trajectory and accuracy.

Army Personnel Weaponry

M4 Carbine

Special Forces soldiers often carry the M4A1 rifle. While similar to the standard issue Austeyr in capacity, its modular design allows more customisable options for special forces operations.

Javelin

Used by the Army, the Javelin is a portable anti-tank weapon fired from the shoulder with a range of 2,500m. Comprised of 2 parts, the Command Launch Unit (CLU) and the round, it is a guided weapon that once locked onto a target can be fired and left to guide itself, freeing the operator to move quickly to another location.

The controls are located on the CLU and combine a magnified day sight and a thermal imaging sight. Stand-alone from the missile, the CLU can be used for surveillance of enemy forces.

Upon launch, the missile is fired from the tube only a very short distance, to aid in low-recoil from a shoulder firing. Once clear, the missile fires its second stage and is propelled towards the target. The gunner can select 2 modes for fire, direct or top-attack. Direct is for bunkers, buildings or helicopters and fires in a low trajectory to the target. Top-attack is selected for tanks, where the missile will climb to a peak of 150m and strike down at the roof of another tank where its armour is the thinnest.
