Employment Training

Australian Defence Force Academy, Royal Military College Duntroon

Royal Australian Artillery Regimental Officer Basic Course: 12 Weeks

Graduates into the RAA can expect to specialise in either Field Artillery, (which includes Locating Artillery), or Air Defence Artillery and will receive training directly related to their employment. Initial regimental training in units provides the young officer with a challenging leadership experience and lays the foundation for further employment as a captain and major within regiments.

Most courses are conducted at the School of Artillery located at Puckapunyal in VIC. Some Captains selected for appointments as instructors at the School of Artillery attend specialised training overseas. This is conducted at the Royal School Of Artillery at Larkhill in the United Kingdom, the Gunnery Instructors Course in Canada or the Air Defence Instructors Course conducted in the United Kingdom and Sweden. Gunner postings also exist in the Ministry of Defence (United Kingdom) as the technical intelligence officer and at the Royal Military College of Science (RMC of S) and at the Army Battle Simulation Group, (Sydney), as controllers. RMC of S, together with the Australian Technical Staff Officers Course (ATSOC) at ADFA, prepare captains for appointments in technical staff postings. Selected captains also serve as instructors at the Royal School of Artillery in the United Kingdom, Malaysian School of Artillery, Fort Bliss and Fort Sill in the USA on exchange appointments. There is ample scope for Artillery related overseas postings, as well as other general overseas postings with organisations such as the UN.
