Period of Service

You will be appointed for an Initial Minimum Period of Service (IMPS) of 9 years.

Further specialised courses, such as flying instructor, may attract further service obligations according to the length of course undertaken.

Selected pilots may be offered or apply for a further Short Service Commission or a Permanent Commission at the completion of the initial appointment period. Applications are to be made not less than six weeks and not more than two years before the completion of appointment. Most SSO pilots who apply for extensions have been granted them.

Termination of Service

Appointments will be terminated if any of the following occur:

  • failure to pass flying training courses;
  • withdrawal from flying duties;
  • inadequate performance as a pilot;
  • assessed as permanently medically unfit;
  • assessed as medically unfit for employment as an Army Pilot;
  • sentenced to dismissal from the Service by a Court Martial; or
  • completion of the specific term of appointment and not granted an extension of service.
