Role. The role of the Royal Australian Corps of Transport (RACT) is to control and operate Army owned surface transport, other than unit transport, and to provide movement control, terminal, postal and Army aspects of air logistic support to the Army.
The RACT plays a pivotal role within the distribution network of the Australian Army. The men and women of the RACT plan and deliver the required personnel, stores and equipment, Combat Service Support (CSS) through the distribution process utilising road, rail, sea and air transportation.
The RACT has many tasks to perform including operating the Army fleet of landing craft and amphibious vehicles, all forms of road transport, distribution centres and specialist units that prepare, pack and dispatch supplies dropped from the air. To perform these tasks, the RACT is equipped with a large selection of vehicles including motorcycles, Land Rovers, light trucks, heavy cargo and specialist vehicles (Mack MC3 and Mack Fleet Liner MC2), 60 tonne semi-trailers, amphibious and small landing craft.
As a Cargo Specialist, you will play an active role in the RACT and be responsible for the movement of cargo by air, land and sea. Cargo Specialists are a unique trade utilised throughout Australia and are a vital capability for ADF operational deployments overseas. As part of a small team, you will be responsible to receive, process, store, manifest and on-forward stores and equipment in support of ADF operations and training.
Cargo Specialists are trained on a wide range of equipment including computer based cargo tracking systems, medium and heavy transport, rough terrain forklifts and cranes. When training as a Cargo Specialist you will gain transport licence codes, Material Handling Equipment (MHE) licence codes and handling Dangerous Cargo (DG) qualifications.
In addition to land based tasking, you will have the opportunity to work closely with Navy as part of the Ships' Army Detachment. You will load, unload and secure cargo onboard HMA Ships travelling around Australia and the world.
Cargo Specialists are widely tasked as they are involved with all modes of transport and vehicle types, as well as the interface between Army, Navy, Air force and civilian transport at Ports, Air Heads and Rail Terminals.
