Job Details
A Groundcrewman Aircraft Support is part of the Australian Army Aviation (AAAvn) Corps which is a key element in providing the Army with its mobility and dedicated aerial reconnaissance. AAAvn provides mobility for troops and equipment in the battle zone, as well as conducting specialist armed reconnaissance, firepower support, surveillance, in a combined, joint or interagency environment.
AAAvn is also involved in providing, casualty evacuation, mobility for commanders and an airborne command and control capability.
Army Aviators currently fly five types of helicopter, Sikorsky S70A-9 Black Hawk, Boeing CH-47D Chinook, Bell 206B-1 Kiowa, the new ARH Tiger and MRH-90 Utility helicopter. The Super King Air fixed wing aircraft is also operated.
A Groundcrewman Aircraft Support is involved in the provision of aircraft fuelling; arming and ground support services necessary for the preparation and continued support of Army Aviation aircraft operations.
Groundcrewman Aircraft Support are required to:
- Site and prepare advanced landing grounds and helicopter landing points;
- Operate and maintain day and night landing aid equipment;
- Prepare and maintain aircraft hides and revetments;
- Operate fire fighting equipment;
- Marshal rotary wing aircraft into and from landing points
- Marshal fixed wing aircraft on aircraft movement areas;
- Complete the rigging and preparation of helicopter external loads;
- Attach helicopter external loads to aircraft cargo hooks;
- Assist aircrew with aircraft internal loads;
- Prepare and pack pallets for tactical and strategic RAAF (Air Force) air movement;
- Assist aircrew with aircraft role equipment configurations;
- Move and secure Army aircraft;
- Camouflage and conceal Forward Arming and Refuelling Points (FARP) and other unit equipment;
- Prepare, load, unload and make safe Army aircraft ordnance and pyrotechnics;
- Conduct passenger briefings for Army aircraft;
- Administrate, classify, pack and endorse dangerous goods for air and ground transport;
- Drive, operate and maintain a range of bulk fuel carrying equipment;
- Operate and maintain a range of powered and hand operated portable fuel pumping equipment;
- Drive, operate and maintain specialist aviation explosive ordnance transport and loading vehicles;
- Drive, operate and maintain aircraft towing equipment;
- Perform ground navigation (vehicle mounted and dismounted);
- Conduct hot (aircraft running) refuelling in an aviation FARP;
- Conduct cold (aircraft shut down) refuelling of Army aircraft;
- Manage aviation fuels and perform Fuel Quality Control (FQC) checks;
- Establish and operate Explosive Ordnance Loading Area (EOLA) in an aviation FARP;
- Establish and maintain line communications;
- Operate and maintain basic radio communications equipment;
- Assist with cleaning aircraft;
- Administer first aid;
- Use basic soldiering skills to provide for the defence and security of aviation units; and
- Participate as a member of a flight deck team in order to conduct Groundcrewman Aircraft Support duties aboard selected HMA (Australian Navy) Ships.
