Job Details

A Groundcrewman Mission Support is part of the Australian Army Aviation (AAAvn) Corps which is a key element in providing the Army with its mobility and dedicated aerial reconnaissance. AAAvn provides mobility for troops and equipment in the battle zone, as well as conducting specialist armed reconnaissance, firepower support, surveillance, in a combined, joint or interagency environment.

AAAvn is also involved in providing, casualty evacuation, mobility for commanders and an airborne command and control capability.

Army Aviators currently fly five types of helicopter, Sikorsky S70A-9 Black Hawk, Boeing CH-47D Chinook, Bell 206B-1 Kiowa, the new ARH Tiger and MRH-90 Utility helicopter. The Super King Air fixed wing aircraft is also operated.

A Groundcrewman Mission Support is involved with the establishment and maintenance of command, control and communications equipment and facilities in support of Army aircraft operations.

Groundcrewman Mission Support soldiers are required to perform the following tasks:

  • Control and operate Mission Planning Systems (MPS) in support of aircraft operations;
  • Set up, operate and perform operator maintenance on in service radio sets and associated equipment;
  • Pass message traffic by plain voice, coded plain voice and encrypted voice means;
  • Establish and maintain data-link and satellite communications;
  • Establish and maintain line communications;
  • Perform communications staff duties required for the management of cryptographic material;
  • Perform the duties of an Aviation Operations Cell Clerk;
  • Establish and maintain flight following procedures in support of aircraft operations and activate search and rescue (SAR) elements if required;
  • Operate aircraft Data Loader Recorder (DLR);
  • Load Crypto Net Variables (CNV) into Army aircraft;
  • Load Precision P(Y) codes into Army aircraft Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers;
  • Drive, operate and maintain specialist aviation command post, general support and liaison vehicles;
  • Operate a variety of administrative applications on office information systems;
  • Operate Battlefield Command Support Systems (BCSS);
  • Erect, camouflage and conceal Aviation command posts (CP) and communications equipment;
  • Administer first aid;
  • Use basic soldiering skills to provide for the defence and security of aviation units;
  • Perform ground navigation (vehicle mounted and dismounted);
  • Operate fire fighting equipment;
  • Operate Power Generation equipment;
  • Utilise complex computer software; and
  • Operate with military symbology.
