Military Police Officers lead operational policing in both the domestic environment and in operational theatres overseas, commanding platoons dedicated to Law Enforcement, security, the functions of mobility and manoeuvre support, and detention operations.
The tasks of an officer of the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police (RACMP) include:
- Advice to commanders and staffs on military and civil police matters;
- Traffic control;
- Assistance with local defence of headquarters, installations and vulnerable points;
- Assistance with the physical security of military installations and property, military ports, rail centres, depots and terminals;
- Ceremonial escorts and protective security of VIP;
- Light protection of convoys and security escort for weapons and ammunition;
- Assistance with refugee control;
- Control of stragglers;
- Assistance with control and evacuation of prisoners of war;
- Assistance with the maintenance of morale and discipline outside unit areas;
- Prevention, detection and investigation of crime;
- Investigation of military traffic accidents;
- Investigation and apprehension of absentees and deserters;
- Control and administration of detention facilities;
- Exchange of police information with service police, allied forces, civil police authorities and other law enforcement agencies; and
- Assistance to civil authorities in the event of a natural disaster or civil emergency.
After service in a General Duties Company, Military Police Officers may also gain the opportunity for specialist training and deployment in Close Personal Protection and Investigations.
