The Operater Administrative (OP ADMIN) soldier is a member of the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps (RAAOC) which is one of the largest logistic organisations in Australia when compared to civilian companies. It is responsible for a very large range of tasks not only supporting the Army but also the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force.
The RAAOC is concerned with the provision of logistic support to the Army, specifically with providing, managing, warehousing and issuing all the Army's equipment. RAAOC is also responsible for such things as the demolition and disposal of explosives, salvage of battle-damaged equipment, re-packing of parachutes and many other support services.
The OP ADMIN is a multi-skilled, highly versatile member of usually a small administrative support team. As an administration specialist, an OP ADMIN has responsibility for the personnel management of Defence and civilian members. In addition, they are responsible for a diverse range of clerical duties including the operation and management of modern information management systems and a range of communications equipment. Within the trade there is a variety of differing employment opportunities due to the diverse nature of administrative support. In many instances, an OP ADMIN must be capable of working alone and being self motivated.
An OP ADMIN is one of the few Army trades that performs the same role and duties in peace and in war. As an OP ADMIN progresses through the trade and ranks, they gain a great deal of useful administrative skills including personnel management, public administration, financial management and concepts of government procedures. The skills gained as an OP ADMIN are easily transferable to the public sector and civil industry.
Primary Duties
The duties listed below are those that could be expected to be performed. Note that not all duties are performed in each position:
- Interpret policy, legislation and regulations to provide clerical and administrative advice;
- Use in-service office technology and communication equipment;
- Maintain records, files and register incoming/outgoing correspondence;
- Prepare administrative documents for signature and release;
- Maintain maps, logbooks, messages and information in an operational environment;
- Manages units resources and finance;
- Operate personnel management information systems; and
- Operate Resource Management Systems.
Key Trade Features
This trade provides for the quickest means of achieving full trade pay of all Army trades. After 80 days recruit training at Kapooka near Wagga Wagga NSW, an OP ADMIN spends another six weeks in trade training at Bandiana, near Wodonga VIC. There is very little waiting time between Kapooka and Wodonga as clerical courses are conducted on a regular schedule;
The trade has better than average promotion prospects as this trade has a minimum period of time in rank of only three years and no backlog of personnel awaiting promotion compared to other trades with more than a four year period and significant promotion backlogs;
There is a substantial geographic posting diversity associated with being an OP ADMIN as they are employed in every Australian capital city and many other major population centres throughout Australia;
OP ADMINs are deployed on virtually every overseas operation due to the ongoing requirement for administrative support to the mission. For example all units that deployed to Bougainville, East Timor, Solomon Islands and the Middle East all had OP ADMINs with them; and
All training is fully accredited with formal qualifications. An OP ADMIN can gain up to a Statement of Attainment towards a Diploma of Business.

When in the field, on exercise or in a battle zone, in addition to normal trade duties, perform basic soldiering skills including manning defensive positions, patrolling, traffic control, camouflaging of vehicles and field equipment, and navigation.
All training is fully accredited with formal qualifications. An OP ADMIN can gain up to a Statement of Attainment towards a Diploma of Business.
