Job Details

The Technician Geomatic is a soldier in the Royal Australian Engineers who collects, manipulates, portrays, reproduces and distributes spatially referenced earth data. (Spatially referenced data includes maps, digital geographic information in vector, raster and matrix form, and geographical coordinates).

As a corps, soldiers of the Royal Australian Engineers are known as 'Sappers' and are responsible for assisting our own forces to move whilst also denying mobility to the enemy. Sappers are trained in a broad range of tasks including bridge-building, clearing minefields, demolitions, field defences, building, road and airfield construction and repair, emergency response and geomatic and multimedia support.

Main Job Functions:

  • Conduct terrain analysis and terrain visualisation tasking, by exploiting geospatial databases;
  • Manage in-theatre geospatial databases, by collecting, storing and disseminating topographic information;
  • Capture and exploit airborne imagery to provide imagery support to operations;
  • Capture and process geodetic and engineering survey data, perform aero-triangulation and conduct photogrammetry tasks;
  • Compile maps and use automated cartography equipment; and
  • Provide limited hardcopy and softcopy reproduction capability to disseminate geospatial products.
