Army | Challenge Yourself

A Typical Day

The great thing about the Army is the fact that a typical day doesn't really exist. Most Army units will begin the day with a workout, which our members agree is a great way to start the day. Our instructors make it fun and there aren't many other jobs that pay you to keep fit!

When in barracks you could expect to work a normal week similar to that of people outside the Army. Except you will generally have an earlier finishing time of around 4.30. This gives you the chance to go home and catch up with family and friends, or to stay on base and make use of all the amazing sporting facilities.

If you're on deployment somewhere within Australia or overseas your daily routine will vary and you'll be putting your training to use in a more challenging environment.

Accommodation

During basic training you'll be required to live on base. You'll find your living quarters comfortable, practical and private. Once all of your training is completed, you will have the option of moving off base. If you choose to stay living on base you will enjoy the sports and recreation facilities that are a common feature of every Army base. You will also benefit from the low cost of accommodation and food, which will allow you to use your salary elsewhere, maybe even to save for your own home!

This may surprise you but a lot of Army personnel actually live off base in their own private accommodation. In fact the Army encourages its members to do this by offering various forms of housing assistance, for renting or buying your own home.

After 6 years of service you may also be eligible to receive a low interest home loan of up to $80 000.

A second family

You'll make great new friends in the Army. In fact, you will make friends in your Army career that will last a lifetime. Even people who've only been in the Service for a few weeks talk about their new 'family'. It's one of the best parts of Army life. You will also find that after a couple of years in the Army you will have friends living all over Australia and throughout the world. This means you'll have friends to catch up with virtually anywhere your travels take you!

Good food and lots of it

There's a saying that an Army marches on its stomach. In other words, if they are fed well, they'll perform well. That is why the food you'll enjoy is varied, nutritious and tasty. You honestly couldn't eat better than this if you cooked at home, or went out to restaurants every night. In fact you'll probably never eat this well consistently at any other time in your life!

Sport / Fitness

Army personnel are required to pass an annual fitness test, so are encouraged to participate in sporting activities. Because we expect you to maintain a basic level of fitness for operational purposes, we incorporate sport into your normal working day. Most people in the civilian world complain about never having enough time for work and exercise. In the Army we pay you to keep fit, on our time!

Once you've finished for the day you're free to leave your Army Unit and head out. But there are plenty of things to keep you entertained right on base. We provide you with just about every sports and recreational facility you can think of and there are clubs that cater to every interest you could imagine.

Lots of leave

You'll find that in the Army you get more time off than you would in most other jobs. You will have a Basic Annual Leave Entitlement of 4 weeks per year. You may also be entitled to 5 extra days of recreational leave to compensate for any additional time spent carrying out official duties after hours or on weekends. After 10 years of service you become eligible for 3 months long service leave. In certain circumstances such as a return from deployment in Australia or overseas, you may be granted time off to compensate for the additional hours worked while on deployment. This time off does not come out of your normal leave entitlements.
