Sports & Recreation

If you're into sport, you've come to the right place. Sport promotes teamwork and fitness, so not surprisingly it plays a big role in Army life. Physical activity is included in a typical day's work so essentially you're being paid to keep fit!

Get paid to keep fit

It's not just organised physical training we're talking about. You can take part in all of your favourite sports using our football ovals, basketball and tennis courts, swimming pools and gymnasiums. We have clubs representing just about every sport you could imagine and if there isn't one for your favourite sport, you can form your own!

Great way to start the day

In addition to your own sporting pursuits, the Army requires you to take part in organised Physical Training. Most Army units will begin each day with a one hour workout. But it's not all running and push-ups. You'll do activities such as aerobics, sports training, circuits and endurance training. Most agree that it's a great way to start the day.

You're getting paid to study for a degree, but not a day goes past that you don't do something in the way of sport or physical training. - Brendan, Engineering Officer.

Time for fun

People don't realise that working in the Army is, in many ways, just like a normal job. Once you've finished for the day, you can take off and do whatever you like. While you're free to leave your Army unit and head out there are plenty of things to keep you entertained right on base. Social life on an Army base usually centres around the Mess, where there's a bar area, the latest in home entertainment facilities and often a huge range of games. It's a great place to kick back, unwind and have a laugh with your mates.

Represent the Army in sport

The Army has teams representing a number of sports including all football codes, basketball, cricket and golf. Being a part of any one of these teams is lots of fun but also promotes teamwork and strengthens friendships between workmates. Many bases have clubs that cater for sailing, skiing, rock-climbing and even car enthusiasts.

Friends for life

Ask any soldier what they like about the Army, and they're bound to say the mateship. You'll go through a lot with your fellow officers and soldiers. You'll often eat, work, train and socialise right alongside them. So it's no wonder you make strong friendships. In fact some of the friends you make in the Army will be your mates for life.
