For a young person leaving school, there aren't many jobs that pay as well as the Army. Equally, if you're a professional looking for a change of pace, wages in the Army are very competitive compared with similar jobs in the civilian world. The great thing is that you also have the opportunity to considerably improve your salary package, with the range of impressive benefits on offer.
Your salary will continue to increase based on competency level, rank and years of service. Or alternatively, gaining additional skills and undertaking further study may place you in a higher pay group. This means that you would move to another pay scale where, due to your skills and training, you would receive a higher pay rate regardless of your rank and years of service. Your local Defence Force Recruiting Centre can show you the pay rates and how this works.
There are three types of pay brackets for you to look at. The first applies to training, the next is for officers and the final one is for soldiers.
How much you earn as a trainee depends on what stage you are at and which type of training or study you are undertaking.
$30,709 per year
$35,096- $39,483 per year
$35,742 - $40,508
$26,211 (4 years to grad) - $40,508 (final year)
$50,754 (1st year) - $60,330 (during internship)
$50,754 (1st year) - $56,362 (4th year)
*undergoing initial/trade or employment training. Wages paid are available on each job information page.

On completion of employment training, as an officer in the Army you could expect to earn a minimum of $59,011 per year, including your Service Allowance. As a degree qualified officer you will earn more depending on the nature of your qualification and its relevance to your chosen role in the Army. Just like in the civilian world, your pay will increase as you gain more experience and move up the ranks. Your total wage will be made up of a Base Salary, a Service Allowance (received by all full-time members), and other allowances that are relevant to your employment at the time. For example when on deployment, you will receive a Field Allowance.
