Submarine Allowance is paid to qualified submariners in recognition of the difficulties and hardships inherent in living and working on a seagoing submarine. It is the Submarine Service equivalent of a Seagoing Allowance, but it is a higher amount. The amount of this allowance is linked to the amount of time you have served at sea and increases as you spend more years there. It starts at $17,635 per year and rises every 3-5 years to a maximum of $32,532, after eleven years or more at sea. You must have completed all the training necessary to qualify for your dolphins to receive this allowance.
The Service Allowance is paid in recognition of the special demands and challenges of life in the Australian Defence Force. You will receive $12,128 per year.
Submariners also qualify for all of the benefits offered by the Australian Defence Force like full medical and dental cover and the House Purchase Assistance Scheme. A generous Superannuation Package is also available for all serving members with the Employment Contribution starting at 18% upon entry (that's double the mandated minimum contribution rate!). In some cases, if you stop being posted to a submarine position you can still be paid the qualification part for up to three years. This can only happen if you are still a volunteer for submarine service and are medically fit.
