From early age, Commander Mona Shindy’s parents instilled in her the importance of education and a belief that she could achieve anything if she worked for it.
A love of science and maths drew her to a career as an engineer. Her interest in the Navy was sparked by postcards from her older brother, who had recently joined the ADF and was enjoying regular visits to overseas ports. Not long after finishing university, 21-year-old Mona found herself working as one of the first women ever on a Guided Missile Frigate. Her engineering role included providing checks and balances onboard the ship and ensuring that sailors kept up maintenance and were prepared for any situation.
Mona loves the variety and travel opportunities that are a part of her job and almost twenty years after joining, she still believes that Defence was the right career path for her. “I stay for the culture, the community, the friendships, and the opportunities to undertake different types of work and interesting work at that,” Mona says.
Mona’s next posting will to take her to the United States, along with her husband and three children, where she’ll work on the acquisition of the Aegis Weapon System for the Air Warfare Destroyer. She’s proud of the fact that she’ll be able to look back at the many projects she’s worked on in the Navy, knowing that she made a meaningful and worthwhile contribution.

When joining the ADF, you should be aware that you might need to move frequently during your career. For some people, this is part of the attraction of joining!
