There are two ways that you can study, while earning a wage and receiving benefits from the Defence Force. The first is at ADFA, the Australian Defence Force Academy and the second is at a civilian university of your choice, studying as part of the Sponsored Undergraduate scheme.
The Australian Defence Force Academy, situated in Canberra is a university like no other. Run jointly by the Navy, Army and Air Force in conjunction with the University of New South Wales, it offers you combined military and leadership training, with a fully recognised degree from the UNSW.
The lifestyle you will enjoy there is outstanding. There are 23 hectares of sporting fields and a state-of-the-art indoor sports centre with squash courts, a gymnasium, weights room and a swimming pool. You'll also be close to Canberra's best cocktail bars, clubs and pubs and attractions like the Australian War Memorial and Parliament House.
We offer degrees in a wide range of disciplines taken from Humanities and Social Sciences, Business, Engineering and the general Sciences. If you study with us we'll pay you a salary of $21,146 p.a. in your first year and up to $33,753 p.a. in your fourth year. All of your Higher Education Contribution Scheme fees will be covered and most of your textbooks paid for. As well as this, the ADF will pay for all your medical and dental care.
As one of the Australian Defence Force's Sponsored Undergraduates you can study at the university of your choice and we will pay you up to $33,753 per year while you do. We will pay for all of your uni related fees like HECS, textbooks and equipment charges. You will receive full medical and dental cover and subsidised housing if you need it. In return you will become a member of the ADF for the length of your sponsorship plus one year. However, please note that this is open to limited employment groups.
Whilst at university you will enjoy a lifestyle similar to any other student. There are no significant military commitments during the semester, so you can focus on your studies and enjoy your free time as any other university student would. During semester breaks, you may have some work commitments focussed on introducing you to your professional life in the Navy, Army or Air Force. Current undergraduate students have travelled to different cities around Australia for work placements and have loved this opportunity to combine course requirements and travel.
