Military Education

The Academy Military Education and Training (AMET) program is carried out in ‘blocks', at the beginning and end of the year and six hours per week during the academic sessions. The training activities will be designed to directly test the leadership qualities you have been learning about in the classroom.

The AMET program includes subjects such as:

Leadership Studies

This forms a large part of the AMET curriculum as although it is one of your individual subjects, it is also a significant component of every subject and training drill you undertake. Leadership is key in your preparations to become a Junior Officer in the ADF.

Drill and Ceremonial

This promotes reaction to command, self-discipline and teamwork through knowledge and practice of the customs and traditions of military ceremonies.

Field Craft

This introduces you to life in the field as a member of a larger group and survival in adverse circumstances.

First Aid and Health

Examines the impact on society of drug and alcohol abuse and teaches first aid and preventative health techniques.

Weapons Training

This gives you training in the operation and maintenance of small arms Service weapons.

What military training will you undergo?

The military training program is designed over a three-year period to provide you with the fundamental knowledge, skills and attitudes required by junior Officers in the ADF. This provides a foundation for the individual services to conduct further training and development when you leave the Academy. The military training program is made up of two key components – Academy Military Education and Training, and Single Service Training.

Military Law

This introduces you to the Defence Force Discipline Act and the Geneva Conventions. The subject is designed to enable you to function in the Academy environment with more detailed training being conducted nearer the time of your commencement as an officer in the ADF.

Equity and Diversity Training

This provides you with the skills to live, study and develop in a healthy academic and social environment by teaching you how to treat people fairly and with respect in accordance with ADF policies.

Physical Training

This teaches fitness, strength and agility. Physical training classes are conducted during the weekly military training program. As sport and a high standard of physical fitness are important parts of Service life, you are encouraged to obtain a coaching or refereeing qualification for at least one sport while you are at ADFA.

Military Communication Program

This introduces you to the style and forms of written communication used by Defence. It is also designed to develop confidence and effectiveness in your oral and written communication skills, which are necessary for your military careers.

Single Service Training

Single Service Training (SST) is generally conducted at the beginning and end of the year for varying periods of time and gives you the opportunity to experience and learn about your chosen Service.

The Services are responsible for designing and implementing the structure and content of SST which is outlined below:

Naval SST

Prior to commencement at ADFA, on joining the Royal Australian Navy, you will complete Initial Officer Training at HMAS CRESWELL at Jervis Bay. This is followed by a six-month consolidation period in the fleet.

During your second and third years at ADFA you will go to sea in a variety of ships where you work alongside sailors to gain an appreciation of shipboard life and work. If you're studying engineering, you'll also undertake periods of work experience during your naval training.

Army SST

The SST for Army Officer Cadets is conducted at the Royal Military College (RMC), Duntroon in Canberra. This takes you to the level of a trained soldier. The training, conducted at platoon level, includes weapon handling, field craft, navigation and tactics.

Air Force SST

Air Force SST is designed to allow you to complete your Air Force Junior Officers Initial Course during your time at ADFA. The training includes general Service knowledge, ground defence training and air power knowledge. It will also assist you in deciding which branch of the Air Force you would like to join. In your second year you will spend five weeks at the Officer Training School at Point Cook in Victoria.
