You'll need to be at least 17 years of age and be able to provide a Birth Certificate as proof. (In certain circumstances proof by Statutory Declaration may be acceptable.) If you're under 18, you will need the written consent of your parents or legal guardian.
The Navy, Army and Air Force do not discriminate by race, religion, sexuality or gender. Women are trained just the same way men are. This means they're expected to perform equally, with natural physical differences taken into consideration.

The ADF requires a high level of visual correctness to meet the unique nature of the military environment. There are some instances where visual shortcomings are acceptable providing vision can be corrected by spectacles or contact lenses. As part of the recruiting process, your vision will be examined to determine your suitability for a particular job and Service with the ADF.
As part of your application you will be required to complete a detailed Medical History Questionnaire and undergo a full medical examination by a qualified Medical Officer at the Recruiting Unit.
If you have any existing medical condition you must disclose it to allow a judgement to be made on the relevance of that condition to your training and performance. Failure to disclose it may result in your discharge from the ADF. Such conditions include:
• asthma or other breathing problems
• diabetes
• epilepsy or other seizures
• recurrent back pain
• migraines
• any condition which requires regular visits to your doctor, or
• any health problem for which you take regular medication.
Reports that you can bring from your own doctor will help the Medical Officer to make a fair and timely decision. You should consult medical staff through your local Recruiting Centre if you wish to obtain advice about any of these conditions and how it may affect you.
