Job and Study Options

Every position within the ADF is available to Indigenous Australians. The continued contribution of Indigenous personnel strengthens our operational capability and creates a workplace reflective of Australia's diversity. As you will see, there are a range of different opportunities for all Australians to become involved in the ADF.

Australian Defence Force Cadets

The ADF Cadets offer Indigenous Australian youth the chance to experience what life is like in the Navy, Army or Air Force while taking part in adventure training and personal development programs. Currently there are Indigenous Cadet Units in Bamaga, Wadeye, Tiwi Island, Daly River and Thursday Island and they have strong links to NORFORCE, the 51 FNQR and the Pilbara Regiment. Being in the cadets will improve your leadership qualities, give you the chance to promote your individual culture and develop an even stronger sense of community. It's also lots of fun! Learn More

Defence Indigenous Cadetship Project (DICP)

The Department of Defence recognises the need to provide employment and career development opportunities for all Australians. If you've already started a full-time undergraduate degree, and are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait islander descent, you may be eligible for the DICP. You could have the rest of your Uni fees paid for while you finish your degree, as well as earn a work placement opportunity within the Australian Defence Force. Learn More

Get paid to study

The ADF offers a fantastic range of sponsored study options that allow you to earn a salary while you complete a university degree at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) or the university of your choice. Enrolling at ADFA offers a professional career with a university degree by combining military and leadership training with a fully recognised degree from the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Or, if you've already started a university degree in disciplines such as Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing or Allied Health you can apply for the Defence University Sponsorship. We'll pay for you to continue your education, with a career in the ADF upon completion of your degree. Learn More

Work part-time as a reservist

If you are interested in joining the Australian Defence Force but are unable to make a full-time commitment, or you want to try it out first, the Naval, Army and Air Force Reserves are a great option for you. They have a flexible training and work program, so if you already have a job or your family and community commitments take up a lot of your time, you can generally work around these. You earn tax free pay and allowances, with all accommodation and meals taken care of during training or while completing exercises. As there are ADF Reserve positions available throughout Australia, you won't have to travel too far from home to be a part of the action.

Trades & apprenticeships

The opportunities and benefits on offer through Navy, Army and Air Force trades, traineeships and apprenticeships are outstanding. Get paid while we train you to become skilled technicians and tradespeople that look after every piece of equipment, from ships, jets and tanks, through to missile systems. This training takes half the time it does in the civilian world and provides you with nationally recognised qualifications. Once you've qualified, the rewards are fantastic. You receive a highly competitive wage, rental assistance, free medical and dental care and you'll be working in a job where adventures and amazing experiences are part of everyday life. Learn More
