Deployments and Exercises

Deployments and peacekeeping exercises are your chance to make a positive difference to other people's lives while working on important humanitarian and disaster relief programs. Below are just a few examples of recent Navy Operations and Exercises.

Operation SLIPPER

HMAS Toowoomba recently returned home after a highly successful tour of duty in the Middle East conducting operations under Operation SLIPPER. HMAS Toowoomba disrupted Somali pirates off the Horn of Africa, as part of international counter-piracy operations in the region. The group also made an important contribution to Maritime Security and Counter-Terrorist Operations in the Gulf of Oman and in the Arabian Sea. Australian boarding parties searched suspect vessels for illegal cargo, including drugs and weapons.

Operation ASTUTE

Operation ASTUTE is the ADF's continuing contribution to maintaining peace and stability in East Timor. The ADF deployed to East Timor to assist the Government of Timor-Leste and the United Nations presence brings stability, security and confidence to the Timorese people. Along with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) personnel, members from the ADF have created the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) in East Timor. The ISF remains in support, ready to respond to requests from the Government of Timor-Leste and the United Nations.

Operation PALADIN

Operation PALADIN is Australia's contribution to the UN Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO), established in 1948 to supervise the truce agreed to at the conclusion of the first Arab/Israeli War. UNTSO involves Israel, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. Australian personnel have supported this operation since 1956. Members of the Australian contingent may be employed in a variety of roles, including staff officers in the UNTSO Headquarters in Jerusalem, as well as military observers in a variety of locations.
