Navy pilots fly rotary wing aircraft. They form the front line of the Naval Aviation Branch and operate either from the Navy's Air Station at HMAS ALBATROSS, Nowra NSW or embarked in a variety of ships at sea.
The Navy's front-line line helicopters are the Seahawk and the Sea King which are equipped to extend the combat radius of the ships from which they operate by finding surface or submarine targets and joining their electronics systems with those of their ship to guide weapons accurately to their targets. The Seahawk and Sea King are an integral part of the ship's weapons and sensor system.
The Sea King helicopter is employed in the utility, SAR and limited surface surveillance role and regularly embarks in air capable ships.
The Aerospatiale Squirrel AS350B helicopter is employed in light utility and training tasks.
