Deployments and peacekeeping exercises are your chance to travel Australia and the world while working on important humanitarian and disaster relief programs. Below are just a few examples of recent Navy Operations and Exercises.
Operation PADANG ASSIST commenced in early October 2009. The Indonesian Government accepted an offer of emergency assistance from Australia, following two large earthquakes near the Indonesian Island of Sumatra. The Navy has played a vital role delivering humanitarian aid as part of the ADF’s Joint Task Force 629. They have worked closely with Indonesian authorities, the Department of Foreign Affairs, AusAID and other agencies, delivering emergency relief to where it is needed most.
The Navy recently provided significant support to the Australian Government’s humanitarian relief effort for victims of the earthquake and tsunami devastated island nation of Samoa. The heavy landing ship, HMAS Tobruk, sailed from Sydney loaded with a range of goods, equipment and relief aid destined for Samoa and Tonga.
Operation AZURE is a deployment of ADF personnel to the United Nations peacekeeping operation in Sudan, known as the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS). The contribution includes military observers and personnel who specialise in air movements and logistic support. The UN Security Council authorised the establishment of UNMIS on 24 March 2005 after the government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement to end a civil war which had lasted more than 20 years.
