Anzac Frigate

The ANZACs are long-range escort platforms with roles including air defence, anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance and interdiction. The ships are capable of countering simultaneous threats from the air, surface and below the surface. Powered by a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion plant, it can achieve speeds in excess of 27 knots and has an operational range of more than 6000 nautical miles.

Each Anzac Frigate is fitted with an advanced package of air surveillance radars, omni-directional hull mounted sonar and electronic support systems which interface with a state-of-the-art combat data system.

Weapon Systems

The ANZAC's Mk42 torpedo system is capable of firing the new MU90 anti-submarine torpedo. Designed to combat any current or perceived submarine threat, it can run silently to conceal its location or dash at speeds over 50km/h. The ANZAC Frigate is also equipped with an Mk45 127mm gun which can fire rounds up to a range of 20km.

The weapons systems of the ANZAC Frigate are maintained and operated by the ship's Electronics Technicians. They make sure all the weapons systems, radar, navigation and communications equipment are functioning correctly.

Controllable Pitch Propeller

Controllable pitch propellers (CPP) for marine propulsion systems have been designed to give the highest propulsive efficiency for any speed and load condition. When the vessel is fully loaded with cargo the propulsion required is much higher than when the vessel is empty. By adjusting the blade pitch, the optimum efficiency can be obtained and fuel can be saved.

The CPP also improves manoeuverability of a vessel. The direction of thrust can be changed without slowing down the propeller. The increased manoeuverability can eliminate the need for docking tugs while berthing.
