Navy | The Team Works

The Royal Australian Navy has recently purchased three new Air Warfare Destroyers (AWD) and two Landing Helicopter Docks (LHD) due to be delivered over the next decade. These high-tech ships will form the foundation of the Navy's future capabilities.

Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD)

The AWDs will provide air defence for accompanying ships in addition to land forces and infrastructure in nearby coastal areas, and for self-protection against attacking missiles and aircraft. The Aegis Combat System incorporating the state-of-the-art phased array radar, AN/ SPY 1D(V), in combination with the SM-2 missile, will provide an advanced air defence system capable of engaging enemy aircraft and missiles at ranges in excess of 150km.

Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD)

Navy is currently in the acquisition phase for two new Amphibious Assault Ships (LHD) that will invigorate the Australian Defence Force’s amphibious capability.

The amphibious ships will provide the government with an exceptional warfare capability that will also allow it to be employed in a wide range of non-combat operations such as evacuating Australian citizens from areas of trouble or providing disaster relief and humanitarian assistance after natural or man-made crisis.

At over 230m long and 25,000 tonnes, this ship looks like a small aircraft carrier but is in fact a vessel that can operate both on land and in water. It is designed to carry, support and deliver over 1000 troops, six helicopters and 150 vehicles, including the Army's M1A1 Abrams Tank.

MRH90

The Navy will soon be operating the new MRH90 Multi-role helicopters. This fully electronically controlled aircraft is capable of carrying 20 fully equipped troops or up to 12 medical stretchers. Built to be capable at night or in poor weather, its pilots will be wearing the same Helmet-Mounted Sight Display used by the crew of the Army's ARH Tiger, which will allow them to have navigation data and visual feeds displayed on their helmet’s visors.
