Helicopters and hardware

Aviation Technicians get to work with some amazing equipment. Firstly there are the helicopters, some of the most advanced in the world and built to withstand extreme conditions like high seas, heavy rain and strong winds. Then there's the various equipment associated with the aircraft like the automatic flight control system and the sensors - including the Super Searcher radar, magnetic anomaly detector, sonobuoys, and the Forward Looking Infrared device (FLIR), which detects heat sources in the ocean and on land, from a great distance.

Mates for life

When you join the Navy you're leaving one family to enter another. The teamwork based culture of the Navy develops incredibly close friendships, and many of the people you meet will become life-long friends. Life on base can be very social, once you've finished for the day you can play a team sport together or catch up for a movie or dinner. The lasting friendships really are one of the best parts of service life.

Navy Electrician

Training for the civilian world too

The training and qualifications our Navy Aviation Technicians receive are highly regarded in the civilian world and, if they want to take up a similar position outside the Navy, they will usually have to complete only the most basic of conversion training. For instance, a qualified Navy aircraft mechanic would only need to complete a “types” course, on an airline's specific type of aircraft, to be able to work on their rotary wing (helicopters) and fixed wing aircraft. Civilian employers also value the discipline and work ethic of people who have been in the Navy, so the training you receive will set you up for life.
