Education Requirements
Australian Defence Force Academy
At the time of entry, applicants must have Year 12 academic results acceptable to the University of New South Wales, University College at the Defence Academy for entry to their respective faculty. For Navy engineering applicants this must include a pass in (by State):
- ACT: Majors in English, Mathematical Methods and two other subjects;
- NSW: English (Standard); Intermediate Level Maths (now called Mathematics and previously called NSW 2 Unit Mathematics) and two other subjects;
- QLD: English, Mathematics B (HA) and two other subjects;
- SA/NT: English (or Year 11 plus Year 12 Language-rich subject), Mathematical Studies and two other subjects;
- VIC: One of the VCE English Group Choices, Mathematical Methods 3 & 4 and two other subjects; and
- WA: English Literature or English, Mathematics (Year 12 Calculus) and two other subjects.
Requirements are expressed as a minimum.
In States where Year 12 English may be replaced by a Humanities subject for the purposes of meeting Year 12 certificate requirements, the assumed knowledge is Year 11 English plus a Year 12 Humanities subject.
Note: All applicants for undergraduate programs at ADFA must also apply to the Universities Admissions Centre (NSW and ACT) for entry to the University of New South Wales. The Universities Admissions Centre website is http://www.uac.edu.au
Graduate
The minimum requirement is a four year engineering degree permitting graduate membership of Engineers Australia (EA) as a professional engineer. The following is a list of acceptable disciplines. Degrees not in this list will be considered on a case by case basis:
- Avionics Engineering (preferred degree)
- Communications Systems Engineering (preferred degree)
- Electronic and Communications Engineering (preferred degree)
- Electronic and Systems Engineering (preferred degree)
- Software Engineering (preferred degree)
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering (preferred degree)
- Electrical and Mechatronic Engineering (preferred degree)
- Computing Systems Engineering
- Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering
- Electronic and Computer Engineering
- Electronic and Micro Engineering
- Electronic Engineering
You may commence the selection process if you are in the final year of a four year Bachelor of Engineering Degree and can present your completed third year academic transcript. Your appointment will be subject to successful completion of the final semester of your Engineering Degree.
Undergraduate
Undergraduate Engineers must have successfully completed at least one year of study and have no more than three years of study outstanding to complete all of the requirements for the award of their degree.All Weapons Electrical Engineer applicants must be studying a four year university degree permitting graduate membership of the Institution of Engineers Australia as a professional engineer. The following is a list of acceptable disciplines. Degrees not in this list will be considered on a case by case basis.
