Seamanship Course
Location: HMAS CERBERUS
Duration: 3 weeks
This course is completed by all Seaman Branch sailors and covers all aspects of basic seamanship, including:
- Boatwork - crew, maintenance and navigation of power boats;
- Rigging - working all types of cordage and wire ropes, understanding splicing, maintenance of all forms of rigging, blocks, slips and shackles;
- Anchorwork - maintenance of ships and boats anchors and cables, and acting as a member of a ship's cable party; Helmsmanship - steering the ship;
- Ships Husbandry - cleanliness and maintenance of all parts of a ship (except machinery spaces); and
- General - a working knowledge of ship organisation, routines, survival at sea and Rule of the Road for the prevention of collision at sea.
Basic Combat Systems Operator Course
Location: HMAS WATSON (South Head, Sydney) or HMAS STIRLING (Rockingham WA)
Basic Combat Systems Operator (Above Water) Course
Duration: 15 Weeks
Basic Combat Systems Operator (Underwater) Course
Duration: 21 Weeks
Training will be conducted specific to ship type so that, as far as practicable, sailors develop skills on the equipment that they will use in their first postings.
Whilst conducting Basic Combat Systems Operator Course sailors will cover:
- Core – provides underpinning knowledge to perform general tasks within the ship's Operations Room including; application of Action Information Organisation principles, operation of Combat Data Systems, ships sensors and identification equipment, voice procedure to talk on radio circuits and compilation of the Surface picture;
- Information Networks – enables the use of information systems that provide command with tactical decision aids for situational planning;
- Above Water Warfare (Combat Systems Operator (Above Water)) – provides sailors with the theoretical and practical skills required to operate Combat Data Systems in a Surface, Sub-surface and Air Warfare environment;
- Anti-Submarine Warfare (Combat Systems Operator (Underwater)) – gives operators the basic skills required to operate the Sonar equipment fitted to detect, classify, track Submarines, whilst protecting allied forces; and
- Equipment Application Course (EAC) – practical use of the associated Combat Data System or Sonar system the Combat Systems Operator will operate.
