Combat Systems Operator
The operation of the Combat System in ships is the responsibility of Combat Systems Operators. All Combat System Operators man sensor equipment such as Radar and are required to specialise in either Electronic Warfare or Sonar Operation. They are also required to man Radio Voice Circuits between ships and aircraft. Combat System Operators also provide combat data and operations planning support.
The basic functions of the Combat System Operator sailor after initial category training include: manning the Action Information Organisation - the warfare/fighting centre within the ship; - the operation of combat data systems; - the operation of radar, sonar and electronic warfare equipment; - weapons fire control, where this function is a part of the ship's combat system; and ship's husbandry. During initial postings to sea as junior Combat System Operators these sailors will be employed as Air Picture Compilers, Surface Picture Operators, Electronic Warfare Operators or Sonar Operators. They will also be required to carry out seamanship, ship's husbandry and communal duties.
