A Communications and Information Systems (CIS) Sailor is a highly
trained command Telecommunications and Information Systems
operator, who works in a dynamic and demanding, highly classified
military environment. CIS sailors manage the flow of information
into, out of, and around Navy units and establishments using
leading edge technology.
CIS sailors:
- Operate selected Local Area Networks (LAN) and Information Systems at sea, including software applications;
- Prepare, handle and distribute messages around ships and shore establishments through the use of computer technology;
- Send and receive messages by radio telephone, radio, satellite, Morse flashing light, semaphore, flags and through the use of email;
- Operate radio and satellite equipment;
- Maintain security of special compartments, messages and other types of military material;
- Maintain communications compartments and specific equipment such as signal projectors, lights, flags, portable radios and selected IT equipment.
