Other Ranks (Non Technical)
Salary while undertaking Military (Recruit) Training: $1,076 per fortnight ($28,060 per year).*
Salary while undertaking Employment Training: $1,216 per fortnight ($31,719 per year).*
Salary (excluding allowances) on completion of Employment Training: $1,483 per fortnight ($38,662 per year).*
Once you have completed Recruit and Employment training you will receive Service Allowance of $409 per fortnight ($10,672 per year) to compensate for the unique requirements that service life may impose on you or your family.
To assist you in maintaining your uniforms in good order and condition, you will also receive a Uniform Allowance of $16 per fortnight ($419 per year).
In addition to your salary you will also be entitled to the following Commonwealth Government Initiatives:
- The Tools For Your Trade initiative provides a tool box and tools to the value of $800 for every registered apprentice. All RAN technical apprentices have benefited from this initiative since it was introduced in late 2005;
- The Apprenticeship Wage Top Up Scheme provides further financial support to Cook trainees (who are under 30 at commencement of their apprenticeship) who will receive four tax exempt payments of $500 at the 6, 12, 18 and 24 month points of their apprenticeship.
Each General Entry job in the Australian Defence Force is classified into a pay group. This particular job is classified as a Pay Group 2 occupation, with the following progressions as applicable:
- Cook Grade 1 Pay Group 2;
- Cook Grade 2 Pay Group 3;
- Cook Grade 3 Pay Group 3;
- Cook Grade 4 Pay Group 3; and
- Cook Grade 5 Pay Group 4.
Salary will continue to increase based on rank and the number of years of service completed in that rank. Pay Group may also increase following the acquisition of additional skills and completion of advanced courses.
Trainees with dependants may be entitled to Trainee's Dependant Allowance which is paid to enable trainees with dependants to receive a salary not less than $1,406 per fortnight ($36,658 per year) while training. Conditions apply. Speak to your Careers Counsellor for details.

Qualified

Other Ranks (Non Technical) (Reserve)
Salary while undertaking or waiting to complete Employment Training: $78.21 per day tax free.
Each General Entry job in the Australian Defence Force is classified into a pay group. This particular job is classified as a Pay Group 2 occupation. Members of the Reserve on part-time service are paid at a daily rate of pay and this occupation attracts a starting rate of $90.03 per day. Once fully trained you will receive $105.92 per day.
In addition to your salary, a Service Allowance of $11.01 per day is payable to compensate for the unique demands of Reserve Service.
