Engineer Officers’ Application Course
On completion of their degree studies, Marine Engineering Officers undertake the Engineer Officers’ Application Course. This course is aimed at providing a link between their academic study and its practical application in the naval environment and includes subjects such as main propulsion plants and auxiliary machinery, monitoring equipment, hydraulics and pneumatics, sewage treatment, ship stability and maintenance administration procedures.
The Application Course is conducted in three phases. Phase 1 is conducted primarily at HMAS CERBERUS, on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. Phase 2 lasts approximately 12 months and is conducted entirely at sea. The junior officer is issued with an Engineer Officers’ Requirements Journal - a log with a range of assignments that require the junior officer to participate in ship borne Marine Engineering activities and demonstrate levels of competence relevant to subsequent employment in the Marine Engineering Primary Qualification (specialisation). Phase 2 culminates in successful achievement of a Certificate of Competence after which the junior officers undertake the final phase of the course, a further two units of a Masters Degree, covering Project Management and Systems Engineering.
After this course the officer will normally take up their first posting ashore for up to two years before posting back to sea as the Deputy Marine Engineer Officer (MEO) of warships.
