Other Ranks (Technical)
To meet the Royal Australian Navy's requirement of a Marine Technician, the following training is undertaken on completion of Recruit training.
Course: Marine Technician Initial Technical Training (ITT)
Location: Engineering Faculty, HMAS CERBERUS, Crib Point, Victoria.
Duration: 26 weeks
Note: Prior to commencing employment training, the level of maths ability is assessed to determine whether remedial maths training is required.
To provide the MT with the appropriate level of training, all MT sailors are provided with common technical operator training. Successful completion of the Marine Technician Operator Training will result in the awarding of ‘Certificate III in Transport and Distribution'. This qualification meets the requirement of the appropriate Industry Training and Advisory Board ( ITAB ) Training Package and is a nationally recognised qualification.
MT trainees will complete Auxiliary Machinery Operator acquaint modules in various systems to prepare them for their first sea posting. Modules comprise:
- Steering Gear Systems;
- Stabiliser Systems;
- Ships Diesel Generators;
- Electrical Switchboards;
- Air Compressors;
- Desalination Plants ( Evaporators and reverse Osmosis);
- Sewage Treatment Plants;
- Air Conditioning Systems;
- Refrigeration Systems;
- Pumping Systems; and
- Ships Motor Boats.
All MT trainees will consolidate their ITT by completing a 24 hour Right of Passage within HMAS CERBERUS (Simulation of watchkeeping and maintenance duties in an engineering environment at sea).
Further Navy specific training will be conducted to prepare Sailors for their first deployment to sea which will include, Damage Control and Fire Fighting (containing elements of electrical damage control) and Survival at Sea.
Following the completion of the minimum initial period of service, sailors may be provided with the opportunity to complete Technical Trade Training. To provide the MT with the appropriate level of training, all MT sailors selected for Trade Training are provided with common technical apprenticeship training.
Successful completion of the Marine Technician Apprenticeship will result in the awarding of ‘Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade’. This qualification meets the requirement of the appropriate Industry Training and Advisory Board ( ITAB ) Training Package and is a nationally recognised qualification.
Qualified, Other Ranks (Technical) (Reserve)
Duration: The duration of the Marine Technician Alignment Training depends on the level of Recognition of Prior Learning granted.
Location: HMAS CERBERUS, Crib Point, Victoria.
